966 Cadet receives RAF Association Flying Scholarship

June 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

Cadet Flight Sergeant Siena Whiteside has been awarded a 12 hour Royal Air Forces Association Flying Scholarship 2011.

The RAF Association awards five scholarships to Air Cadets annually. The overall winner receives a 35 hour flying scholarship, and the four runners-up receive 12 hour scholarships. Scholarships are flown at South Warwickshire Flying Club and cadets follow the syllabus for award of National Private Pilot Licence (NPPL).

There were over 70 applications for the scholarships this year, and 12 short-listed applicants were invited to RAF Cranwell for the final selection board. Selection involved undertaking the RAF Pilot Test Battery aptitude test followed by a Board Interview with leading members of the RAF Association.

This year’s scholarship winners were invited to the RAF Association’s Annual Conference 14-15 May, for award of their scholarships.

The cadets were hosted at the York House Hotel in Eastbourne, and invited to the Flying Scholarship Dinner on Friday evening. The guest of honour was Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Barbara Cooper, who proved to be a delight to meet. In her speech, she commented that, having had no children of her own, overnight she became responsible for over 40,000! She exhibited her joy in having such a caring responsibility as Commandant Air Cadets. Others attending the Flying Scholarship Dinner included Eddie Cox, Bob Hounslow and two RAFA Liaison Officers.

Following a wonderful dinner, scholarship winners and others attending the Scholarship dinner joined other RAF Association members for some refreshments, with background music provided by an ensemble of the Central Band of the RAF.

On Saturday morning, the cadets met the Air Member for Personnel, Air Marshall Pulford, who later presented their awards in the Conference Hall, in front of 700 members of the RAF Association. The award-winning cadets were introduced as ‘the top cadets in the Air Training Corps’. The guest speaker, Air Marshall Pulford gave an extremely interesting and informative speech about current and future RAF operations and the impacts of the Government cuts across the sector.

The winning cadets look forward to completing their RAFA Scholarships this summer. FS Whiteside plans to complete her NPPL during the scholarship; her next step towards a flying career.

Method of Instruction Course

June 12, 2011 in Wing Events

On 14 May 2011, FS Ewers and Cpl Evans were the first 966 Sqn cadets to attend the new Method of Instruction Course at Wing Headquarters.  At the CO’s discretion, this course is open to cadets who have satisfactorily completed the Master Air Cadet syllabus and wish to proceed to Instructor level.

The course lasts one day and consists of a number of topics such as: instructor qualities, the training cycle, the structure and plan of a lesson, aims and objectives, etc, after which the cadet has to deliver a 5-10 minute presentation of their own. The object of the presentation is to test how confident the cadet is in front of other people, their bearing and how well they involve members of the class in the lesson.

Following a satisfactory completion of this course, a cadet has to present another lesson in the normal squadron training environment.  This will be assessed by the Sector Commander for 966 Sqn, Flt Lt Breward, who, if satisfied that the necessary standard has been met, will present the cadet with an instructor cadet’s yellow lanyard.

Wallingford Classic Car Rally

June 9, 2011 in Squadron Events

On Sunday 8th May, 7 cadets from 966 Squadron assisted at the Wallingford Vehicle Rally.  They helped marshal classic cars through Wallingford town for the parade and also helped out collecting money for SeeSaw, the principal charity at the event, a charity which supports bereaved children. The squadron also had a recruitment stand to try and attract young people to join the squadron, proving successful with a few potential cadets signing up. The car rally was a great opportunity for the cadets to reinforce the squadron’s image within the community and promote the activities that the Air Cadets offer, with Cpl Evans making an announcement over the public address system on the benefits of joining the ATC.  Cpl Godfrey said, ‘It was a great day out and got to meet lots of new people.’ Overall the day was a enjoyed by all.

On Sunday, 8th May 2011, cadets pitted their sporting skills against cadets from squadrons from all over the wing at the most recent inter-squadron athletics at Tilsley Park in Abingdon. During the day, cadets from 966 (Wallingford) Squadron took part in running the 800m, throwing the javelin and high jump. Other competitions included long and short races, long jump, shot put, discus and relay. Unfortunately the squadron did not rank in the top 3 squadrons in the wing but did win a medal. FS Ewers said “I am pleased with coming third in my 800m race”.

Nuffield Day Walk

June 9, 2011 in Squadron Events

On Saturday, 21st May 2011, 6 air cadets and 4 staff members from 966 (Wallingford) squadron took the challenge of going on an adventurous walk around Nuffield. They walked approximately 19Km in total and carried all the kit they would need for an overnight stay including food, water, clothes, sleeping bag and roll matt. Along the walk they mainly stuck to the footpaths, but encountered field and wooded areas, stiles and gates. The cadets’ map reading skills were put to the test to check they were staying on route and they used compasses to check that they were walking in the right direction.
Cpl Payne said “The best part was that we were helping Warrant Officer Barker and Cadet FS Ewers to pass their Basic Expedition Leaders Award so that we can go on many more of these fun filled walks. It was very enjoyable and helped test our skills for our upcoming silver Duke of Edinburgh walk in Dartmoor.  Cdt Woollard added “It was great fun, but very tiring. I look forward to doing more of these walks in the future!”

Wallingford Mayor’s Sunday Parade & Service

June 8, 2011 in Squadron Events

The traditional Wallingford Mayor’s Sunday Parade & Service was held this year on 5 June. Cadets from 966 Squadron took part alongside servicemen and women from RAF Benson. In addition, members of the RBL, ACF, and local Scouts, Guides and Brownies also took part in the march past.

Air cadet numbers were somewhat down this year due to pre-arranged flying and supplementary drill commitments but nevertheless the Squadron turned out a credible number of 11 cadets.

Members of Wallingford Town Council were in attendance as the Mayor, Colin Dalton, along with the Commander of RAF Benson, Group Captain Richard Mason took the salute. This was then followed by a service at the church of St Mary-le-More and a reception at the Regal Centre.

This occasion was also the first official engagement of 966 Sqn’s Flight Sergeant Ewers in his new appointment as this year’s Mayor’s Cadet.

Llanbedr AT Camp

June 6, 2011 in Wing Events

A number of 966 cadets and staff recently attended a week’s adventure training at NACATC Llanbedr, one of the Corps’ Adventure Training centres – 7 days of hard work, exercise and (mostly) great weather!

During the week, the cadets participated in low level walking around the North Wales countryside, as well as high level mountain walking and a night of wild camping, having carried all their equipment along and set up their own camp. They also enjoyed two days of outdoor rock climbing and abseiling, and some time on the centre’s climbing wall and high ropes course. They were also taught some useful knots in a knot-work workshop with CI Rowan and Fg Off Beasley. A tiring week for everyone! On the thursday evening, the cadets were all taken down to the beach for a game of kwik cricket, from which A flight, under 966′s Cpl Godfrey, emerged victorious (both other flights having registered negative score!).

After 6 days of exhausting activities and great food, the last night was a BBQ, complete with marshmallows to toast and paper plate awards. Of course, the last evening’s water fight needs to be mentioned, with some great planning involved by the staff to water bomb the Camp Comm, Fg Off Christlieb!

Off Cdt Lee, WO Barker and Sgt (RAF) Walsh attended from the staff and Cpls Payne and Godfrey and Cdts Woollard, Hasker and West from the cadets; the girls making up a full 50% of the wing’s strength of female cadets at the camp. Hopefully, the cadets will all want to return for another AT camp with the wing next year! If you’re interested in developing your AT skills with the ATC, talk to the Training Officer or AT Officer at the Squadron.

The photos above show some of the activities which the cadets enjoyed during the week.

Royal British Legion Awards Evening

May 27, 2011 in Squadron Events

A number of cadets attended the Royal British Legion Awards on  Thursday 26 May.  Having been thoroughly grilled by members of the RBL a few weeks previously, FS Ewers and Cpl Godfrey were aware that they were contenders for Cadet of the Year. In the end, because of the high standard, the judges couldn’t decide who should get the Cadet of the Year award, so it was presented jointly to FS Ewers and Cpl Godfrey for services to the community and 966 Squadron.  Various other awards were presented to members of the Legion and the Army Cadet Force. Congratulations to both for an outstanding performance!

Following the awards there were two presentations by Flt Lts from RAF Benson.  The first presentation was by a Puma helicopter pilot who described the helicopter, the role it played in Iraq and the way training is carried out in Kenya.  He also said the Puma was being updated as it is 40 years old this year and interestingly he informed us the original Puma engine type is the same as used in the original French high speed train.

The second presentation was by a Merlin pilot who focused on the differences between  the Merlin and the Puma. These were mainly in technology as the Merlin is only 10 years old.  He then went on to describe the many different roles the helicopter plays in Afghanistan.  He finished with a film of a typical day of a Merlin helicopter pilot in Afghanistan.

After the presentations there was a buffet put on by the RBL during which a number of air cadets took the opportunity to question the two helicopter pilots about their jobs.

Finally, the Chairman thanked the air cadets for coming to the presentation and congratulated them on their smart turnout.

CO’s last night and Squadron promotions

May 24, 2011 in Squadron Events

The Squadron’s last CO’s parade was Flt Lt Norcross’s last night as OC 966, and indeed his last night as an RAFVR(T) Officer in the UK, as he was moving to New Zealand!

Flt Lt Norcross presented a number of cadets with awards, made a number of promotions (listed below) and made a leaving speech to members of the Squadron. He was presented with a card from the cadets, a cookie cake and a Squadron t-shirt from FS Whiteside, and the staff also signed a card for him. He then formally handed over control of the Squadron to the incoming CO, Flt Lt Churnside, a long-serving Officer with 966 Squadron.

    Promotions made:
  • Sgt Ewers to FS
  • Sgt Whiteside to FS
  • Cdt Evans to Cpl
  • Cdt Taylor to Cpl
  • Cdt Harrington to Cpl
  • CI Lee also recently passed her wing and region boards for Commission and is now in uniform as the Squadron’s Plt Off.

    Annual Inspection 2011

May 24, 2011 in Squadron Events

On Thursday 5th May, cadets showed off their squadron in the most recent annual inspection conducted by the Wing Executive Officer, Sqn Ldr Haines, and the Wing Warrant Officer, WO Lambert.

During the course of the evening, cadets took part in an inspection, followed by an opportunity to impress the inspectors with their drill. After a short break, cadets faced a quiz about the ATC and the RAF. The three cadet groups took on the single staff group in a “battle of the minds”. One of the cadets said “it was an extremely fun night and all the cadets had a lot of fun.” The cadets were all very proud of what was achieved and were extremely happy when one of the inspectors said that we were a great squadron and had the potential to become even better. The Wing Warrant Officer was very pleased with the amount of girls on the squadron and hoped to see a female team for the drill competition.
